Prison Literature And The Inmates Who Read It

By Michael Obrien

Of course there is truth to the statement that most people incarcerated in the prison system are there because they deserve it. The operative word here is "most". This means that not all are meant to be there. If this is the case then prison literature might give some of them the hope they need to survive and to one day be free.

So when they are in need of such materials they put out the word that they need help. Sadly however there are not to many public officials that want to help unless it is an election year. So the people who end up donating are usually people who have some sort of history with jail in some way, shape, or form.

There are stories of past inmates who spent multiple years locked up and when they were released ended up having a decent life. So as a way to give back they donated money or supplies to help the place get books or build a library. When this happens it is a great thing, sadly it does not happen everywhere. Magazines are one thing they do have but once they are used up they become old news.

While it is usually extremely unlikely, there is concern that some of the more intelligent inmates might use these law books to gin the upper hand on the legal system and try to find a loop hole of sorts to get themselves a shorter term. Or worse yet, get themselves out of jail entirely. This being the case some people are against them reading such books.

There are a lot of people who have very strong feelings about the prison system and do not want to help anybody who is there learn to do anything. They figure that if they did not take advantage of the schooling they were given on the outside why should we pity them now and teach them to read. A lot of people agree with that statement.

Books for jails are not always that easy to come by. Because it is a prison there are rarely ever funds for anyone to just go out and purchase books to supply the library with what they might need. Since this is the case they usually rely on donations from various parties to supply the books they require and most times those do not happen enough.

There are cases of big donations taking place every now and again but those are too few and far between to be of any help to enough of the prisons to make a difference. This being said, when it does happen there are cases of the books being either too far gone, damaged, or of the wrong types of materials.

When prison literature is scarce it comes down to the people in the prison and the town surrounding the prison to help out. The inmates can do very little to help their situation because of their situation. But the people who watch them, feed them, and surround them can provide them with the means to better themselves even if just a little bit.
