Scandinavian home furniture creators

Scandinavian home furniture makers have created a lot of wonderful home furniture during the 1930s to the 1960s. Much of this furniture has grown to be extremely popular within the last number of years. In Denmark alone, more than 10.000 pieces were crafted over the last few decades.

Today most of this furniture is well-known around the world and it's still being reproduced. The Ox and Y-Chair by Hans J. Wegner, the Swan Chair by Arne Jacobsen are just a couple of examples. This post will touch upon the history of Scandinavian home furniture designs and exactly why these have become so well-known.

Scandinavian home furniture design is mainly thought of as minimalistic and functional. IKEA furniture is a good example of this. From a functional perspective, furniture needed to be appropriate for regular usage and also be affordable for everyday people. Nevertheless, the furniture remained expensive. The reason for this was it's high-quality due to the use of high quality materials.

If we take a look at just how this furniture has been built, it was sometimes industrially crafted or made by hand. An illustration of a designer who primarily made hand crafted furniture is Kaare Klint. The Swan Chair by Arne Jacobsen is one example of a chair that's industrially built. The reason that the Swan Chair was industrially manufactured was because it was difficult to make the form of the chair by hand from the required material. If we discuss industrial construction it is very important to emphasize that we do not imply large-scale production as it is now. In this case, industrial production basically means that the furniture was machine made.

Talking about Scandinavian design from that period, it is important not just to think about vintage chairs. The designers of this time period also made lots of other appealing designs which still remain popular to this day. The Globe made by Poul Henningsen, and wooden toys by Kay Bojesen are fine examples. Arne Jacobsen is another designer who produced more than just chairs. While he designed the Royal SAS Hotel he furthermore did the full interior personally, including chairs and even knife sets.

But why was the furniture within this time period so popular? That's almost certainly due to the fluid lines used in the design, which helps to make the furnishings particularly attractive. Further, there's a wide variety of colors and fabrics to choose from.
