Can Obstacle Course Races Serve As Fine Platforming Training?

By Rob Sutter

Imagine an environment where there is wide terrain to run across, jumps to make, and heights to ascend. These are the kinds of qualities that obstacle course races share and I don't think that there are many activities that are as physically demanding as these. When you think about it, these kinds of races can almost be correlated to video games with plenty of action and a good number of hazards, too. Platforming video games seem to fit the bill as well as any other.

"Sonic the Hedgehog" was as fast a game as you could find back in the 90's and I don't think anyone could dispute that. He can jump and avoid hazards with the best of them but it's clear that his defining trait was his speed. Even Mario on his best day could not exactly match up to Sonic on his worst at that period of time. While Sonic is easily one of the quicker video game characters in history, I'd be lying if I said that he isn't somewhat older than most.

For an example that's more modern, you may want to consider "Mirror's Edge" and its main character, Faith. This female protagonist is all about moving fast, utilizing parkour in tandem with combat in order to traverse the top of one skyscraper after another. It's clear that she fits well into the athletic protagonist category with such names as Nathan Drake from "Uncharted" and Ezio Auditore from "Asssassin's Creed 2." They each have the ability to take on whatever terrain there is and that cannot be understated.

Obstacle course races are not common subjects that you would see in video games today but I think that they'd be able to find an audience with today's gaming crowd. You have to think about how successful sports series such as "Madden" have been. While many people criticize the series for being stagnant and not doing much to change the tired formula, copies manage to fly off of the shelves. A game about these races could be different and events such as Spartan Race might be featured, too.

Are these the types of games that have to be overly intricate or can they stand to be simpler in terms of execution? I suppose that feature is going to be left up to the developers who take on the project. In my eyes, it can go either way as long as the right events are incorporated, utilizing the ideal obstacles in order to help make these races even greater. Sports games are pretty simple by design, which makes me believe that people can pick up and play these just as easily.
