Commercial And Residential Interior Design

By Frank Brown

The common notion is that interior design is just that - merely interior design. Actually, many people relate interior design only with designer bathrooms and kitchens, posh living spaces, and grand playrooms. Not everybody is aware that interior design in addition deals with business spaces such as theme parks, educational facilities, clubs, bistros, boutiques and theatres. And this is not surprising because many think that the profession of interior designer is confined to residential spaces alone.

The truth is Interior design nearly encompasses approximately everything that we see. This is particularly true in the Malaysia interior design industry. Look at the nation, it would seem that every part of Malaysia's interior design is quite well manicured.

Residential interior design is the most general field of interior design. This area of interior design deals with renovating and designing residential spaces to make visually appealing and functional homes. More often than not, interior designers who practice in this business have their own branch of specialisation like cooking area, bathroom and bed room interior design. Although many are not aware, residential interior designers furthermore tackle the responsibility of selecting colour themes and home furniture of residential spaces. However, in decision making regarding these concerns it's always important for interior designers to work mutually with the customers to meet their personal specifications.

Commercial interior design is a branch that specialises not just in office interior design, but the development of any commercial space or area. Movie theatres, sports facilities, pubs, parks, you name it. As long as the area is used for commercial functions, you can see the work of a commercial interior designer. As with residential interior designers, designers in this branch often have a speciality. Some specialise in the leisure industry; movie houses, pubs, etc. Still others focus primarily government projects such as school structures and parks.

Functionality is the main difference between these two fields of interior design. Residential designers are geared to creating living or residential spaces while incorporating complete aesthetic concepts, then again commercial interior designers are focused more on the functional element of the design.
