For those who watched Nickelodeon heavily during the 90's, I'm sure you've seen your fair share of game shows. "Double Dare" might have been enjoyable in its own right, not to mention immensely popular, but I never thought that there was a great sense of urgency. I wanted to watch the types of programs which made me want to root for the people who were competing. At the risk of sounding nostalgic, these sorts of obstacle course racing shows hold a lot of good memories.
If there's one show that just about every 90's Nickelodeon fan will recall, it's "Guts." It was perhaps at the top of the proverbial food chain and I think a good portion of that came from the fact that it was purer. There wasn't much in the way of aesthetics and it was almost like the show didn't waste any time, which was what I enjoyed about it. "Guts" may have been enjoyable but I have another show that stands as my favorite from that time period.
My favorite of the bunch has got to be "Legends of the Hidden Temple." Despite the fact that it is absolutely silly by today's standards, I don't think that there's a single Nickelodeon fan that hasn't appreciated or even watched it. It mixed trivia in addition to athletics and being able to get through the temple was a test of intelligence and endurance. In addition, I always thought that the various shirts the competitors wore with colors and animal designs were some of the best.
"Legends of the Hidden Temple" may be fun but I'll have an argument in mind for those which deem it a copycat of "American Gladiators." Firstly, you have to consider that channels with children shows do not use obstacle course racing programs that often, if at all, so it was important to give a younger audience that type of show. In addition, it possesses a Mesoamerican theme that wasn't exactly seen before. Regardless, I think these shows have had a lasting impression, especially when considering such events as Spartan Race.
I can't help it; I am, quite simply, a sucker for nostalgic. Sometimes I'll have the itch to go back and watch the shows that have consumed so much of my childhood and it's easy to become attached to them. Obstacle course racing shows seem to have been the most prevalent and I cannot deny the fact that they were enjoyable at one time in my life. I wish that these shows didn't fade in popularity because I could see new viewers watching them excitedly.
