Ensuring Children's Safety with Bedroom Furniture

By Brian Callahan

Kid's bedroom furniture can be found in all types of variations and there are many options to choose from when decorating your children's bedrooms. All it takes is a little know-how on how to purchase and then arrange furniture that will go into your child's room.

A major point to consider is their safety when choosing their new furniture. There needs to be careful planning and preparation in place to ensure you don't waste money and buy unwanted and unsafe furniture. Your children's safety while in their bedroom is of course a big concern for you as parents.

A Kid's Bedroom

Items such as nurseries and other types of furniture must be purchased with the safety aspects being a primary consideration. It is possible to have a convenient table next to the child's crib or bed to change diapers and clothing more easily. Trundle beds are a great idea for when their friends come over for sleepovers or other occasions.

Locations of Cribs

Cribs or children's beds should never be placed near or beneath windows or within proximity of curtain cords. In addition, do not keep any small rugs in the child's bedroom as they are not safe for small children and those who are frequently visiting the child's bedroom.

Kid's Bedroom Furniture Safety Standards

The crib and all bedroom furniture should be purchased from a trusted seller who follows all standard safety regulations for the products. Double-check to examine that the mattress top is not loose on the bed and that it is squarely positioned on top of the bottom bed-piece. Be careful that the child cannot loosen the drop sides of the crib and fall to the ground.

Specific areas of the crib such as posts and other rails need to be no greater than three inches apart. Additional accessories that you may add to the crib need to be appropriately spaced as well. Remove all possible dangers by having the crib be as safe as possible and inspect the crib thoroughly for any imperfections.

Electrical Outlet Hazards

All electrical sockets and outlets within reach of the child must have safety features such as plastic safeguard plugs. Children are very curious and poke their little fingers everywhere. Not having the proper safeguards in place could threaten the safety or even the life of the child.

All furniture and other major items in the bedroom should have smooth, round edges and not have sharp edges. Eliminate rough or sharp edges immediately before the child could get seriously injured. Take away rugs or other extra carpeting that could cause them to fall or get hurt.

Bunk Beds for Kids

The majority of bunk beds have additional safety features that include rails, stairs, etc that protect little kids as they get on the top bunk or play with the bed. These accessories are super important so that kids do not injure themselves while doing things on the bed.

Remember to decorate your children's bedroom in a safe manner that is appealing to them and makes them feel loved and comfortable. As always, safety is the key factor to consider when shopping for your kid's bedroom furniture.
