Things Associated With Outdoor Water Fountains

By Casandra Newton

Possibly the greatest advantage of using outdoor water fountains is the sight it offers. Simply gazing at a waterfall going about its business of transporting gallons of water from a higher surface to the low grounds has something mesmerizing about it. This is what visitors to your house shall find if they are greeted by a man made waterfall. When they see this on the porch they shall get stuck remembering the feeling of watching the splashing against hard rocks and large boulders, fall hundreds of feet into nothingness, they will once again remember nature.

Moisture is one other benefit of a fountain. These manmade marvels mimic the effect of falls in adding moisture to the air. This makes air more breathable and livable in. Moreover, moisture reduces stress and tension in a person. Another marvelous feature of waterfalls is the noise it creates. This is very soothing to hear.

A fountain requires lot of care especially if it is left out in the open. This exposes it to Mother Nature that can cause regular wear and tear. Moreover, the water shall require replacement and in order to keep it operational, one has to constantly check for blockage or precipitate formation.

One area of a fountain that tends to show regular wear and tear is the pump. Because, it operates 24 hours of the day, chances are that the pipes may sprout a leak or something may block the inlets or outlets. Hence, a monthly checkup of the pump is necessary.

Since the surface of the fountain remains exposed, it is prone to catching mineral deposits, algae bloom and animal waste. Hence, regular cleansing of the surface is necessary.

Algae usually prefer hot and humid environments to grow and the fountain surface offers just this during the summer months. To deal with the onslaught of algae bloom, try using a mildly concentrated solution of bleaching powder and a mild acid. Together, they should scrub algae off marble and stone areas rendering the surface completely clean. Another alternative is to use algae pesticides to stop its growth from the onset. While this is extremely effective, it is also equally fatal to birds and animals.

As birds shall always get attracted to fountainheads, there is nothing one can do to avoid animal droppings. The only thing you can do about this is to get a wet sponge, use some soap solution and wipe the surface clean. In the event of a dead bird floating inside the fountain, it may become pertinent to change the water.

The final problem to deal with outdoor water fountains is mineral deposits. These usually appear as large white crusty structures which do not go away with mild scrubbing. Even soap solution shall not get rid of it. To clean it away use a solution of white vinegar with some other mild acid. This shall easily remove the deposits leaving the fountainhead squeaky clean. Moreover, minerals form faster if the water is not regularly replaced. Hence, ensure that the fountain is replenish with fresh supply from time to time.
