Guide To Get Started With Aquaponics

By Alexandra Smith

Most people are not aware what Aquaponics is. Basically Aquaponics is a new technology that provides opportunity for people to grow plants and fishes in an environment where both of them can make use of each others' wastes to their benefits. It makes use of the concept of both aquaculture and hydroponics, wherein aquaculture means developing or cultivating plants and animals that grow in water while hydroponics meaning growing plants without the use of soil thus finding a different solution or medium for it to grow.

Though it is easy to understand and learn, the Aquaponics system of growing plants and fishes is still a new word for most people. One may think that it is a complicated and difficult system to do and start up with, but in reality, it is simply the process of growing plants and raising fishes in an environment that will be beneficial for both of them. Aquaponics makes use of the concept of Aquaculture and Hydroponics. Hydroponics is the process of growing plants without using soil as a medium while Aquaculture is the process of growing plants and animals underwater.

Here are the things to prepare in starting up your Aquaponics system:

Aquarium or fish tank to hold the fish

container that is waterproof

grow beds needed for growing the plants

Filter

pump

Process:

1. First is to prepare the things needed to setup your Aquaponics system.

2. Making sure that the fish tank or aquarium is clean and well-prepared, fill it with water. It is recommended to leave the water on the fish tank or aquarium for a couple of weeks to give it time to mature and ready for the occupancy of the fishes.

3. Prepare your grow beds to be placed near the fish tank. It can be placed above or at the side of the fish tank, whatever you prefer. Another good thing in making use of the Aquaponics system is that you can have as many grow beds as you like but you just need to make sure that the water on the fish tank as well as the fish wastes are enough to sustain and supply them with water and fertilizers.

4. Attach the pump and filter to the fish tank.

4. The pipes and filters should be then attached to the fish tank and grow beds.

Since we are done with the steps on how to start up your Aquaponics system, it is time to know what factors should be considered when putting up an Aquaponics system. These factors include:

1. Plant or vegetation-the plant is responsible for filtering the water naturally and continuously to make it clean for the fishes. Another thing that the plant or vegetation does is making the water free from harmful toxins that will be dangerous for the fishes living on the fish tank. Knowing this information, it is important to make sure that the plants that you grow is balanced and is just enough for the fishes that you are raising. Some of the factors to consider balancing the plants and fishes that you will raise and grow is the feeds that you give to the fishes per day, amount of feeds left over for the plants, weight, size and age of the fishes, type of plant to be raised, and the number of fishes is the fish tank. These factors are important to make sure that the plants get enough nutrients for them to grow healthy.

2. Fish is the next factor to consider in making your Aquaponics system. They are the ones responsible in providing the fish waste which will be utilized by the plants as natural fertilizers. The species of the fish, number of fish you want to grow and the size of the fishes are the important things to decide when starting up your Aquaponics system. The fishes and plants you grow in the system should be well-balanced.

3. The third factor that affects the Aquaponics system is bacteria. Bacteria is responsible for breaking down ammonia into nitrates, which if not broken down will not be absorbed by the the plants and tendency is that it will just remain on the water. Ammonia, if not removed from the water, is a harmful substance that may hinder the growth of your fishes.

One important thing to remember in preparing your own Aquaponics system is to make sure to have balance in all the 3 essentials, plants, fish and bacteria. In that way, you will be sure to grow healthy plants and raise healthy fishes.
